Caperucita en la zona roja
Little Red Riding Hood in the Red Light District by Manlio Argueta
(1998)
Winner of the Casa de las Americas Award, Little Riding Hood in the Red
Light District (Caperucita en la zona roja) is Argueta's most popular novel in
El Salvador, both among critics and the general population_ It has gone through
eight editions in El Salvador, and has just been newly revised by the author.
The story revolves around the relationship between two young lovers,
Alfonso and Horrniga, in a time of political upheaval, evoking characters and
themes from the classic fairy tale within the wartime environment of El
Salvador and its capital, San Salvador. The red light district refers not only
to sexual exploitation but also to the political violence Salvadorans suffered
in the late seventies
